Overview

Jiuzhaigou is a UNESCO-listed valley in northern Sichuan where glacier-fed streams have painted a staircase of turquoise, emerald and sapphire lakes. Wooden boardwalks thread between the waterfalls, and Tibetan and Qiang villages sit among the pines.

At 2,000–3,000 m it stays cool even in summer, and the autumn colour show — gold birch against blue water — is one of China's most photographed scenes.

First-timer's checklist: Five-Flower Lake · Nuorilang Falls · Long Lake · Pearl Shoal · a Tibetan village homestay · the boardwalk loop

A mild, broth-based hotpot with yak meat, mushrooms and highland veg — warming at altitude.

Highland Potatoes

洋芋 · Yángyù

Roasted or mashed local potatoes, a simple staple sold at village stalls.

野蜜·山果

Honey and berry jams from the surrounding forests, sold by villagers.

🍽️ Where to eat

  • Eat inside the park at the visitor restaurants — choices are limited and priced for tourists.

Where to Stay

Where you stay shapes the trip. Three good bases:

🏨

Gateway Town

The practical base with most hotels, 5–10 min from the entrance.

🏡

Park Lodges

Inside or by the gates for an early start; book ahead in autumn.

Nearby Songpan

A historic town an hour away with more character and lower prices.

🏨 Hotel tips

  • Autumn (Oct) books out months ahead — reserve early for the colour season.
  • Stay just outside the gate to save and still reach the first lake at opening.
