Overview

Luoyang was a capital for 13 dynasties and holds one of China's supreme Buddhist sites — the Longmen Grottoes, where tens of thousands of carved figures line a river cliff. In April the city runs wild with peonies.

It is also the gateway to the Shaolin Temple (in nearby Dengfeng), birthplace of Chan Buddhism and kung fu — an easy half-day trip.

First-timer's checklist: Longmen Grottoes · White Horse Temple · Luoyang Museum · Guanlin · Wangcheng Peonies · Shaolin (nearby)
