Overview

Taiyuan is the provincial capital of Shanxi, a province that preserves more old architecture than almost anywhere in China. The must-see is Jinci, a temple complex with a rare Song-dynasty hall.

Taiyuan is also the logical base for two UNESCO-grade trips: Pingyao's intact Ming-Qing walled town (~1.5h) and Wutai Mountain's Buddhist peaks.

First-timer's checklist: Jinci Temple · Shanxi Museum · Mengshan Buddha · Taiyuan Ancient County · knife-cut noodles
